PRESIDENT’S REPORT
O
ur property rental sector is in for a shake-up, and an extra
layer of warmth, with the Government confirming every rental
property in New Zealand must be insulated within four years.
At the same time there are plans to strengthen residential
tenancy laws, including requirements for landlords to provide smoke
alarms, and to declare the standard of insulation on tenancy agreements
(see pages 18-19).
I support these proposed changes and the proposition of making houses
safer and healthier. It is also good that the emphasis is moving away
from the cumbersome, and potentially much more costly, rental property
Warrant of Fitness scheme.
We have enjoyed another three months of excellent monthly meetings,
this time covering commercial property, a night out hosted by Carpet
Court and an insightful presentation from Sarah Berry, the ANZ’s Head
of Mortgages (who has since gained promotion), all written up in this
magazine. Why not join us?
It is also great to see the efforts being made by Larissa and Adrian Ford,
a young couple who are focusing on building their property portfolio
rather than conforming to the stereotype often given to their generation
(see pages 4-5). This shows what can be achieved through hard work and
a practical outlook.
It’s now five years since we launched this magazine – have a great read.
Grant Harris, TPIA President
